Mes pauvres souvenirs d'Allemand ne me permettent pas de comprendre l'article mais j'en comprends assez pour voir que la journaliste est sous le charme Elle ne tombe pas dans le panneau de "Michael sex symbol" qui est partout dans les médias en ce moment et elle met en avant son intelligence et son talent. Au début, je crois qu'elle dit qu'il a une façon de se taire très expressive, qui en dit plus que les longs discours de certains. Il a dû la regarder dans les yeux, on a vu ce que ça donnait dans Shame, avec la scène du métro

It’s the mad grin when the punch hits his cheek.

Michael Fassbender, who now turns 35 years old, is celebrated up and down as the “new Marlon Brando”, the “new James Bond”, the “next Academy Award Winner”, from New York to South Korea – and deservedly so. There are a lot of reasons for that.

One of those is surely that his roles are very difficult – and extreme. The 1977 born German-Irish Actor had his breakthrough in 2008 with the film „Hunger“ which was awarded with the Golden Palm in Cannes. For his role als IRA-prisoner Bobby Sands he lived on berries, nuts and sardines for ten weeks, losing 20 kg. The drama tells about the legendary hunger strike in the North-Irish prison Maze. During the fight for their recognition as political prisoners ten people lost their lives, Bobby Sands being the first case of death after 66 days of hunger. A hardly bearable film, not only because you’re watching a human die, but also because it shows the horror of prisoners and guards. The urine, the excrements, the truncheons, the bleeding hands.

The altar boy

Politics and freedom is what it’s all about for director Steve McQueen in his debut „Hunger“ - same as in „Shame“, in cinemas since March. While the IRA-prisoner Bobby Sands finds his freedom in hunger strike, sex-addict Brandon has all doors opened for him but his own body becomes his personal prison. The role of the human going under his own shame earned Fassbender the Best Actor Award in Venice. In „Shame“ he does not only show naked skin – causing a stir in the media – but also how the bare desperation overruns him. “For me Michael Fassbender changed acting. He is the only one to come into consideration.” When someone, like Steve McQueen, as a director, talks about an actor like this, he must have some really good reasons.

Redblond stubbles, weather-beaten face, washed-out T-Shirt, jeans, always the same leather jacket – at first glance Fassbender’s Brando-Bond-potential is not to be recognized. He, who lives with his Irish mother and German father in Killarney since the second year of his life, speaks rusty German, loves fast cars, played in a rockband which only had one gig, was altar boy, hates phoning, is not a member of facebook nor twitter – he is a real average joe.

From barkeeper to world star

Exactly this is his strength. He’s approachable, real, like his roles: “I like characters with flaws and abysses – because everyone has those”, he says. He’s not a star, rather a craftsman, who attends press conferences in flip flops – formalities do not matter to him. When he takes on a role, he holes himself up and reads the script up to 300 times and more, until it becomes a second nature to him. „Working-class attitude“ is what director David Cronenberg calls it. Fassbender’s ability to vanish into his role thoroughgoingly is what brings him worldwide glory today; for years it looked differently though.

Everything starts with his idol Quentin Tarantino’s play „Reservoir Dogs“ that he enacts as an 18-year-old with his friends – 14 years later in Tarantino’s action-warfilm „Inglorious Basterds“ Fassbender will, as Leutnant Hicox, change the world’s history with just a movement of the hand. Preceding this are a London Acting School and dropping out (of it). For Steven Spielbergs war TV show „Band of Brothers“ (2001) he goes to Hollywood – but comes back to London with ‘his tail between his legs’, as he says himself. Small roles follow up, fear of unemployment, jobs as a barkeeper. Until Steve McQueen turns up. Their first meeting is disastrous though, McQueen finds Fassbender auditioning arrogant. He involuntarily meets him again – and this time it sparks. Nowadays a close, almost affectionate friendship bonds the two of them: “My first priority is to not let him down.”, Fassbender tells in the interview. And McQueen only shoots with him. They are currently working on the third film, „Twelve Years a Slave“. Maybe it’s because of how Fassbender can express, with just a twitch of the corner of the mouth, the loneliness of a man who has to sleep with prostitutes and strangers because closeness is unbearable for him. Fassbender doesn’t need words, his most important tool is his body language, he says.

A man you believe in

Still he knows how to use words, expertly so. The conversation between Bobby Sands and a priest in „Hunger“ made film history – 17 minutes of verbal exchange without one cut. In David Cronenberg’s „A Dangerous Method“ (2011) Fassbender indulges as psychologist Carl Jung in intellectuel escapades with Sigmund Freud – and in sadomasochistic ones with his patient. Next to arthouse-films he treats himself with liminal roles in blockbusters such as „X-Men“ (2011). In 2012 Fassbender is on all channels, alongside Steven Soderberghs action-thriller „Haywire“ in March comes Ridley Scott’s „Alien“-sequel „Prometheus“ to the cinemas in August, a vampire film by Jim Jarmusch is in production. In addition Fassbender works with his production company on his own projects – maybe as director. A lot of things speak for the down-to-earth exceptional talent, but Steve McQueen phrased best, what exactly it is: „Because I believe him what he plays."

Par contre, elle parle du film de Jarmusch, elle ne s'est pas assez renseignée.

Les abysses La seule différence c'est qu'elle parle de ses yeux tandis que l'on parlais de son être

Comme il y a une traduction en anglais, que Joane peut traduire en français, j'ai pensé que ça pouvait quand même intéressé Mais je me rend compte que j'aurais du demander ça pour le "Hollywood reporter" et le "Little white lies" Surtout que ça aurait permis d'amortir les frais de port, surtout pour le 2ème
